My entry for the annual Wunderkammer book of illustration published by Falmouth University. Tarantism was a social phenomenon in medieval Europe, notably Italy, involving crowds of up to thousands of people at a time dancing erratically until they collapsed from exhaustion. The hysteria was thought to be caused by tarantula bites, and the Italian dance Tarantella is said to originate from it.
The Barcelonian
The plan to expand the Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat airport has been resisted by the local community since its conception. The international hub is built on Llobregat delta, a Special Protection Area as a designation under the European Union Directive on the Conservation of Wild Birds. It serves a city struggling with overtourism and environmental problems, including a severe drought. (June 2023)
